Newsletter May 2012

         PRESIDENT'S NOTES
I hope that this newsletter finds you in good health and ready to celebrate.  If you haven’t already heard, this is the 75th anniversary of the establishment of PASR.  Our 75th anniversary planning committee has been very busy.  Exciting events have been happening and will continue to happen every month during our yearlong celebration.  Read more about these events in this newsletter.
The annual spring luncheon will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the Red Eye in Flemington.  Lou Bernard, Curator for the Clinton County Historical Society, will be our speaker.  In conjunction with the 75th anniversary celebration, Lou will be talking about things that were happening 75 years ago in the Clinton County of 1937.  The Clinton County Chapter of PASR was created in 1966.  Lou will also be reminding us of what life was like in our local communities at that time as well.  Come and reminisce or learn new things about this area in which we’ve all worked and lived.
Our luncheon is a time to catch up with former colleagues.  Some members may not be attending the luncheons because they don’t want to come alone to this or to other events that we hold. Please do yourself and a friend a favor and call and invite them to come to the luncheon with you.  A definite win/win situation.
It is dues time!    You may send your dues in the pre-addressed envelope included with your newsletter or pay Fran Kramer at the luncheon.
It’s also time to turn in your Volunteer Hours.  There are three ways in which members can turn in their hours:
  1. 1.     Tally yours hours in the five categories and e-mail your totals to Phyllis Grenoble at Phyllis@chilitech.net
  2. 2.     Call Phyllis Grenoble with your totals at 570-398-1313.
  3. 3.     Fill out the Volunteer Hours survey form included with the newsletter you received in the mail.  Return the survey in the pre-addressed envelope and give your completed survey to Phyllis Grenoble at the luncheon

EDUCATION SUPPORT/VOLUNTEER – DONNA YOST/PHYLLIS GRENOBLE
The EDSUP Goals for 2011-12 were established during the PASR Educational Support Committee meeting held in Mechanicsburg, May 3, 2011.
The recommended goals to continue the presentation of Lauretta Woodson Awards and the awarding of an Educational Support Grant (available to any school employee) were retained.
New Business focused on helping chapters establish/expand the local scholarship programs. As 2012 is PASR's 75th anniversary, it was suggested that each chapter be encouraged to provide
a special scholarship in the amount of $500 to commemorate the event.

Two names have been selected to receive the 2012 Lauretta Woodson Awards, The names of the recipients have not been released, both will be notified within the next month. The awards will be
presented during the first Keystone Central School Board meeting in August 2012. The L.W. Award gives positive public recognition to individuals employed in the district and promotes PASR's support of public education.

This year the Educational Support Grant of $300 was awarded to Cathy Lacy, Enrichment Specialist of Robb Elementary School. All fourth and fifth graders, approximately 120, along with 20 adults will participate in a week long block of Enrichment Clusters. Students and facilitators will complete an evaluation at the conclusion of the project. All projects will be displayed during the “Roadrunner Extravaganza ". Hundreds of parents, grandparents, and other family and community members will attend the evening event.

Three $500 scholarships will be awarded to Keystone Central students, one of the scholarships will be the 75th Anniversary Scholarship. Applications were delivered to Bucktail and Central Mountain H.S. Fran Goodman and David Liddick are heading up the scholarship selection committee. Media coverage will be covered by the local newspapers.

Other volunteer Education Support projects to be completed this year will be held to support the youth of the community. We are looking to complete a backpack/school supplies event and the very successful Big Brothers Big Sisters picnic planned for the upcoming summer months.

Volunteer hours for the C.C. PASR Chapter is close to the 29,000 mark. Plans to present the Clinton County Commissioners with a large, mock check totaling $958,668 which represent our volunteer contributions to the county will be held in June, 2012 during the monthly commissioner's meeting. All members are urged to maintain a record of their many volunteer hours for services performed as they translate into thousands of dollars of value to the local community.

Two hundred dollars was accepted by Julie Jones on behalf of the Family Readiness Group of our local Nation Guard Unit. This year our military donation was used as part of the family activities farewell ceremonies held prior to the local unit's August deployment, this group of men and women will be serving in other countries for the next 24 months.  The 2012 contribution amount to be donated by our organization will be utilized for the purchase of phone cards, and will provide the means for active duty troops to stay connected to family members here at home.

PASR State Convention Report

FROM: JOANN HEIMER
TO: All CCPASR MEMBERS
Report from PASR State Convention
October 10-12, 2011 King of Prussia, PA
Recently Carol Rocco & I attended the PASR State Convention held in King of Prussia from October 10-12. The absence of Pres. Dr. John Nye was felt. Pres-Elect Dr. Stephen Vak presided (will take office in Jan., 2012)

Richard Rowland - Exec. Director gave this report
-“Members fought hard to secure passage of the pension reform legislation passed in Nov. and signed into law by Gov. Rendell in Dec., 2010. While legislators failed to include the COLA we advocated, the new law does include everything PASR advocated to correct the retirement systems’ funding problems and reduce costs to PA’s taxpayers.”

-Announced the addition of Director of Communication Kimberly Taylor Carmo – an excellent job of redesigning the content & appearance of print publications & the PASR Website (www.pasr.org). It is planned that this website will be a “one stop-shopping” site for not only renewing both state and local memberships, but a resource of links for everything of importance to retirees. I recently took the time to look around the PASR Website and found many things of interest. I encourage you to check it out! During an Enrichment Seminar, Ms. Taylor Carmo showed our Clinton County PASR Website and commended us for our work. I spoke up to say that Clinton County was represented at the session but not the man who is primarily for our site, Rich Wykoff.

It is at the state level that administrative staff and elected officers direct the activities of PASR on a daily basis. It is at this level that policies are established to guide and direct the activities of the region and chapter levels. And it is from our headquarters in Mechanicsburg that significant support and assistance is given to our chapters and regions to help us better meet the needs of you, the PASR members. Locally, we are often unaware of this support. As an example, the State disbursed $14,000 in rewards to local chapters for completed activities from July 2010 to June 2011. Our chapter received $275. For 2011-2012, there are 21 activities that fall under five areas: Service to others, Social Opportunities for Members, Information to Members/Nonmembers, Economic Benefits for Members, Growing and Strengthen OUR Association. We can earn up to $625 by accomplishing all 21 activities – our goal is to accomplish as many as possible. .

We also received $268 for the work of our Social Services Memorial Honor Fund Committee. Carol Rocco will tell you about that.

PASR’s Mission – “To serve others in need and help one another enjoy retirement”
Each of our committees uses the Mission Statement and the chapter goals and activities, determined at the state level, to guide our projects throughout the year. We hope that you will volunteer with us to participate in our many activities. (Ask committees to stand).

If you are unsure about working on a year-round committee, 2012 offers a special opportunity, PASR’S 75th Birthday Celebration. The state committee has developed a long list of ideas to facilitate our local “PASR Birthday Party”. We encourage you to become involved with our celebration by joining our planning committee.

We’ll travel to several elk viewing areas, then make a pit stop for lunch (dutch treat) before heading to nearby Elk Mountain Winery where we’ll do a bit of wine tasting and shopping before heading home. If you're interested in the elk, this is a great way to get educated and to see these animals up close. Meet at the Save-a-Lot parking lot on Walnut Street, LH at 9:30 AM to carpool. Cost is several $ for the film at the Visitor Center, lunch at your own cost and sharing in the cost of gas.

As always, feel free to bring friends. When you plan to attend, you should contact Joanne Heimer at 753-3699 or jheimer@comcast.net to facilitate arrangements.

BIG BROTHERS AND BIG SISTERS PICNIC

Donna Yost spoke with the newly appointed BBBS Program Coordinator, Jovana DeSalvo. Jovana would like to plan a picnic activity with PASR. Here are some possible dates to consider: July 9, or 25. We will need a small number of volunteers for whatever date is chosen. Jovana and the BB/BS will plan a nature scavenger hunt at Bald Eagle Park and our group would supply the picnic food and drink. Details will be posted when finalized. However, we do need some idea of how many members will be committed to help.

Anyone interested in helping with time or donations for this event should contact Donna Yost: 748- 5824 or e-mail sy1dy2@yahoo.com
